WordPress SEO Tips You Can’t Ignore

wordpress logoMaybe you have found it difficult to bring in the kind of traffic you want to your WordPress site. If this is the case it is time for you to look into some serious search engine optimization using easily mastered WordPress methods. A lot of people have started using WordPress and consider it to be the leader in the field of blogging platforms. Are you wondering why? Well, it's mostly due to its ease of use in addition to the tons of benefits it packs such as search engine optimization. However, prior to optimizing your WordPress site, it's important that you know the dynamics involved in the optimization. If you can manage to properly use the WordPress settings, then you can expect to get an upper edge than your competition when driving visitors. Throughout this post, I will show you how you can get the most from your site.

The headings you choose for your WordPress blog are very important if you want to rank near the top of the search engines. Your post title must contain all your target keywords, as search engines rely on such relevant keywords in rankings sites. Not only should those keywords be in the title, they should be used throughout your post too. Limiting the usage of each title to one time only will help to ensure that your ranking strategy is clearly communicated to the search engines. It's also important to use search engine optimized tags such as the title tag, meta tag description and meta tag keywords. A great plugin which makes the use of those tags very easy, is the All In One Seo plugin.

Alternatively, it is a good idea to keep relevant keywords listed nearby for application in creating posting titles. Not only intended to convince the search engine, a title should appeal logically to your reader as well. You need to draw the reader in with the title. Titles are not meant to be lengthy, but instead concise and precise and easily intelligible for the reader. Your site's content is crucial for achieving high ranking in the search engines, so it not only has to be high quality; it has to be relevant in every way.

You want to get indexed by Google? The best way to guarantee that is to have a sitemap. Your indexing process will be able go much more quickly if you choose to utilize a plug-in for generating your Google Sitemap listing. It basically helps Google discover all the pages on your site. But you don't need to create a sitemap yourself, you can use a plugin for that. Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress is the plugin I use and recommend you use it within your WordPress blog too.

Also, you'll want to make sure when you decide to post something new to your blog you'll remember to ping it to other websites. When your post gets linked back by other bloggers or webmasters it enables you to have backlinks that will get you some focused exposure. You need to ping every time you post. But again, you don't need to do that manually. WordPress is doing it for you. Login to your WordPress admin area and under Settings click on Writing. At the bottom of this page you'll find a section called "Update Services". Copy and paste the following list of ping services into that field and WordPress will ping those services every time you publish a new post.

Here's the list of ping services:

If you publish several posts per day, I would recommend you're using a plugin, which will optimize the pinging. Because it can happen, that your blog will get banned from those ping services if your WordPress blog does send many pings per day. MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer is great plugin which will help not getting banned.

Including related posts when you add content to your site is another great tip for SEO purposes. There are a number of plugins that make this easy work, and they will automatically insert links to related posts. You can easily decide the amount of related posts you'll want to show, and that will also give the search engines a much simpler way to connect to your older posts. The plugin I use for that is the Yet Another Related Posts Plugin. It does a great job and you have many customization options.

Overall, WordPress provides you with an excellent platform for your website's SEO. Be sure to take advantage of everything WordPress offers in order to achieve the maximum results!

Great post. I'm definitely glad you covered the all in one SEO plug-in, since that little addition alone has allowed some of my niche sites to hit front page with only a few posts and a few basic backlinks. It's still all about choosing the right keywords, but that being said, that plug-in is a HUGE part of SEO with WordPress

Search engines mainly use automated routines to rank websites; with WordPress you can optimize your sites to best suit these programs. This is far better than being desperate for the almighty search engines to throw traffic in your direction absent targeted instructions, which is what happens with your typical HTML site.

This is definitely a very good article regarding WP SEO tips.
One of the tips is that: Test your page load time and keep it under 3 secs

Most of this depends on your server and code. Its not easy, but if you can keep it as low as possible – just great !

Great article! For better page load times, I'd recommend optimizing the server the website is currently running on. Turn on GZIP, turn off etags and enable caching and expire methods!

This way, your WordPress blog will run lightning fast!

  15. Daniel on May 6th, 2010 4:45 pm

@Angela, Thanks a lot for those tips. They are really helpful and since google looks more and more for fast loading sites to rank them high in their listings, a fast loading website becomes more and more important.

In addition to the very useful content posted to maximize each post on a wordpress blog, I did an experiment to see if it makes a difference with my traffic.

Bookmarking your posts to do-follow blogs and submitting the feed of that posts to feed sites is very effective. Try it and you'll see what I mean, but of course with all that advise considered first as mentioned on the post.

I have been running this Adwords account for 4 years and since two months the amount of traffic from this account (2000+ keywords) has been steadily declining. The Quality Score and AVG position remain unchanged. I have been changing the keywords bids here and there but mostly bidding up.

  25. john from lcdsamsung on June 18th, 2010 6:54 pm

I still dont understand why people buy optimized wordpress seo templates,on page factors are not very important it is actually the backlinks.

  26. Daniel on June 18th, 2010 10:59 pm

@john. On page factors are still very important. Try to rank a site or page for middle competitive keywords without optimizing the site or page. You may be able to get some rankings if you're building a lot of back links and as soon as you stop your site or page will drop.

  27. john from lcdsamsung on June 19th, 2010 8:20 am

@Daniel.Did you ever try out any backlink packets like Angela's and did you have any success with it?I still cant get them indexed and therefore they are worthless.

  28. Daniel on June 19th, 2010 4:11 pm

@john. No I never tried any of this backlink packets. I personally think they are used by to many people and so they have become a bit less successful or it's harder to see any results from them. If you do this kind of back linking you need to social bookmark some of those profile links so that they get indexed by Google, otherwise they are worthless, just as you said.

I personally use article marketing and blog commenting as my link building strategy. With article marketing I mean not only article directories but also all the web 2.0 sites where you can submit articles to.

A new race to optimize the wordpress blog has been started,Every blog owner want to increase traffic volume through white hat seo.Google site map definitely important for the search engine listing and get the information of pages on your blog.

  34. Jerremy on July 1st, 2010 2:52 pm

I agree that the best way to get indexed by google is using a sitemap, but I don't know if pings are still having any effect on it.

  35. abi from Wordpress Tutorial on July 3rd, 2010 3:23 pm

Limit excessive pinging in short time to 120 mins when using the maxblogpress ping optimizer. This works best for me.

  36. Marlin on July 5th, 2010 9:25 am

That is a a very amazing SEO lesson for WordPress. Unfortunately it does not come by default, in CMS. Thank you for your links.

  37. Virginia on July 6th, 2010 10:55 am

I like ping services due to the fact that they allow me to automatically notify blog directories and search engines that my blog has been updated.

  38. Francisco on July 8th, 2010 8:42 am

I've heard that WordPress pings one website called Ping-o-matic by default, which in turn pings others so there is no need in specifying extra ping services, is it true?

  39. Reina on July 9th, 2010 1:28 pm

So according to this theory using ping service will improve you appearance in top SERPs results and it will improve your page rank.

  40. Link Building on July 11th, 2010 7:31 am

Great list of services. I will use some of this for my wp blog.

  41. Joel from Growth hormone on July 12th, 2010 8:26 am

Daniel, Nice tips. Another good alternative of All-in-one SEO plugin is wpSEO. I personally tried it and compared to AIOSEO, it is pretty faster. SEO Ultimiate is also can be option (both freely available)

Ping Optimizer is only required for those who posts more than single post a day. or you usually post more than one post at same time.

  42. Bias on July 14th, 2010 9:36 am

Great list, thanks for sharing. Pinging can help increase traffic. Don't ping too often, you can get your blog flagged as spam.

  43. Jacob on July 19th, 2010 12:06 pm

Could someone explain for a newbie what's the difference between a ping and a trackback? It seems to me that they are the same.

  44. Polly on July 23rd, 2010 2:10 pm

I've heard that there are some useful ping plugins in wordpress like Ping-o-Matic and Site Fix, which allows you to ping many sites.

  45. Jamelia on July 27th, 2010 4:11 pm

Thanks for all these great tips. One great strategy to get many backlinks indexed fast is to ping your backlinks, that way google finds them in just a few hours.

  46. Elaine on July 28th, 2010 2:47 pm

Thank you for this list cause a few days ago, I made a big mistake and deleted all ping urls from my blog.

  47. Pauline on August 3rd, 2010 11:16 am

I read that pinging on individual ping sites that are already under a pinging services such as pingomatic doesn’t work anymore as it has to go through them. It’s tough to find a clean list online considering these factors. Another thing to consider is the duplicate pinging if you happen to list multiple services that has the same ping site on them - might get you banned. So, any updated list id appreciate it..

  48. Frank from Søkemotoroptimalisering on August 26th, 2010 9:10 am

First of all - I love wordpress, and have so for a long time. I never thought though that delaying your wordpress posting which scheduled delays might get you banned from pinging services !? New to me, but then again. WordPress is so simple and so complex at the same time, so you learn new things every day :)

    Thanks again,
    best regards.

  52. Sessions on December 16th, 2010 4:52 pm

If the blog is set to be visible to normal human visitors but blocked search engines in the privacy settings, then you won’t have any issue as the WordPress engine will not ping the services upon blog posting.

  53. Timothy on December 28th, 2010 3:26 pm

No Ping-wait is a plugin that does not directly help you in any SEO but it can be referred as a long-term and indirect SEO-supporting tool. This plugin will prevent the delay that is caused while publishing your blog post when you are pinging a huge amount of services by making the pinging-action passive.

  54. lktown on January 5th, 2011 4:03 am

i never heard about the ping service before.I need to search more for this.Is that really so helpful.

  55. Dorothy on January 5th, 2011 4:55 pm

Besides using this amazing plugin for your wordpress blog I would also recommend installing an All-in-One SEO plug, which helps you a lot.
